Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park is one of the most extraordinary and least-visited places in Saskatchewan — a sprawling field of active sand dunes stretching over 100 kilometres along the southern shore of Lake Athabasca in the remote far northwest. These are the largest active sand dunes in Canada, rising up to 30 metres high, accessible only by floatplane or boat from Uranium City. The dunes' isolation has allowed the evolution of several rare plant species found nowhere else on Earth.
The surrounding boreal and tundra transition zone supports woodland caribou, wolves, black bears, and a remarkable array of shorebirds. This is genuinely remote wilderness travel — no developed campground facilities, no maintained trails — and visitors need to be self-sufficient and experienced. For those prepared for the logistics, Athabasca Sand Dunes offers an experience unlike anything else in the provincial park system.
