Last Mountain House Provincial Historic Park preserves the remnants of a Hudson's Bay Company trading post built in 1869 near the northern tip of Last Mountain Lake — the longest natural lake entirely within Canada's prairie provinces. The post operated for only a few years before declining fur trade economics forced its closure, but the excavated foundations and interpretive panels tell the broader story of the fur trade era on the northern plains.
The park sits adjacent to Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area, a globally significant staging area for migratory birds. Arriving in September or October, visitors may witness hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes and snow geese gathering before moving south — one of the great wildlife spectacles on the Canadian prairies.
