Moose Mountain is two and a half hours from Saskatoon and three and a half from Regina. It’s in the southeast corner of the province, near Carlyle. The lake at the centre of it — Kenosee Lake — has a south-facing sandy beach that warms up properly by July and a town (Kenosee Lake Village) at the north end with a hotel, a restaurant, and a golf course. It’s a developed park in the best sense: the infrastructure works, the beach is good, and the setting is parkland hills rather than flat prairie.

I keep going back because it’s consistent. The beach is reliably good. The drive is manageable. The campground is well-run. In a province where some parks promise more than they deliver, Moose Mountain does what it says it’s going to do.

The beach

The Kenosee Lake beach is the reason most families come. It’s sandy, south-facing, and the swimming area is properly warm by mid-July — low 20s Celsius in a good year. The beach is wide enough that it doesn’t feel overcrowded even on a busy summer Saturday, though the parking area fills by 10am and day-use visitors add to the campground crowd significantly.

The water in June is colder — probably 15 to 17°C — which is fine for hardy prairie swimmers but not what you’d call warm. The lake gets its best swimming temperatures in July and August. If you’re booking in June, know what you’re getting temperature-wise.

The campground

Several campground loops around the Kenosee Lake area, with full-service, electrical, and non-electrical options. The loops closest to the beach fill first. Sites in the treed sections are better for privacy and wind shelter but may require more walking to the beach. A camp store operates during peak season.

Moose Mountain is in the second tier of the 2026 provincial parks reservation schedule — April 15 at 7:00 a.m.(changes yearly) It draws real demand. Outside the park

The Kenosee Inn at the north end of the lake has a restaurant that’s worth using for one dinner on a longer stay — it’s not fancy but it’s real food and the deck has a lake view. The Cabin Fever Art Festival runs in late July in the park area; it’s a craft and art festival that draws a specific crowd but adds energy to the park on that weekend.

Carlyle is the supply city, 15 km south of the park. Full Co-op grocery store, Canadian Tire, everything you need for a camping resupply. Don’t leave Carlyle without propane or food — the village stores are convenience prices.

The honest part

Moose Mountain is Saskatchewan’s most reliably good beach park. It’s busy in July, the fees have gone up, and the July long weekend is genuinely crowded. But the beach delivers, the campground is well-maintained, and the drive from either Saskatoon or Regina is reasonable without being trivial. I go almost every year and have never been let down by the park itself — only occasionally by the weather, which is not the park’s fault.
